What Is an Ijazah and Why Is It Important?

An Ijazah is a highly respected certification that grants its holder formal permission to recite and teach the Holy Qur’an with proper Tajweed. Its main purpose is to preserve the authenticity of Qur’anic transmission through a continuous, verified chain of reciters tracing back to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Understanding Ijazah

Linguistically, Ijazah means “authorization,” “permission,” or “license.” In the Islamic scholarly tradition, it refers to a formal endorsement that allows a qualified individual to transmit or teach a specific text—in this case, the Holy Qur’an.

Earning an Ijazah confirms that the student has studied directly under a certified teacher and is now authorized to pass on that knowledge with accuracy and integrity.

Types of Qur’an Ijazah

There are two primary types of Ijazah in Qur’anic studies:

  • Ijazah in Qur’an Recitation with Tajweed
Awarded to students who recite the entire Qur’an directly from the Mushaf while applying all Tajweed rules correctly.

  • Ijazah in Qur’an Memorization (Hifz)
Granted to students who have memorized the entire Qur’an and can recite it fluently by heart under the supervision of a qualified teacher.

Why Pursue an Ijazah Course?

An Ijazah represents a high level of mastery and commitment. It confirms that the student has studied under an authorized teacher, reciting every verse precisely with proper Tajweed. Beyond being a personal milestone, it also grants the holder the honor and responsibility of teaching others and passing on the Ijazah, ensuring the preservation of the Holy Qur’an.

  • For Ijazah in Recitation with Tajweed: The student must recite the entire Qur’an from the Mushaf with correct Tajweed under the supervision of a certified teacher.
